Gorge Trio lived in Minneapolis through most of the 90's. Early on we discovered Milo Fine through the performances he did regularly at the West Bank School of Music. He blew our minds every single time. We eventually began to get together and play, not believing our fortune of having a musician of his immense creativity acknowledging us and helping us to grow as improvisers. This friendship grew to the collaboration, For Loss Of. Gorge Trio created a sound collage by organizing and manipulating countless improvised recording sessions of our trio. At Milo's direction we gave him the length of time of our collage and he recorded his part separately, without listening to our part while he was recording his own improvisations. This was done with the agreement that we would then place his track onto ours, without moving anything of his, without muting or burying anything. We would allow it to be whatever chance has dictated. At first listen, we had been so married to our original recording his parts sounded jarring and unsettling. As we listened more, we couldn't believe how perfectly it fit. It had unleashed a magic that we never could have imagined...

This live record was my introduction to Deerhoof. I'm floored. I can't remember hearing a more pure expression of joy than the drumming on My Purple Past. Grant Blankenship
